Ripeness is all

So says Edgar to Gloucester in Shakespeare's King Lear. The quote in full:

Men must endure their going hence, even as their coming hither: Ripeness is all. Come on.

For members of The Church of Jesus Christ, this concept of "ripeness" is central to our faith. In simple terms, we believe that each of us is a literal child of God. We refer to Him as Father and feel we are invited, even commanded, to speak with Him in a very personal and direct way.

In the midst of difficult times, this profound opportunity to speak directly to God is certainly a vastly under-utilized blessing available to us. I readily admit that although I know this is offered, I don't always take advantage of it. In fact, I find I must constantly shorten the distance between God and myself, since it seems so easy for me to drift away from His offered intimacy.

In a word, He wants me to be ready. Always. Ready to go where He wants me to go, to be what He wants me to be, and to do what He wants me to do. As the Savior taught us, "my kingdom is not of this world." In other words, the things that matter to Him are not the things of this world.

The essence of the atonement of Jesus Christ is found in the power it gives us to reach a state of oneness or "at one ment" with the Father and the Son. They want us to do Their work, which is the work of love. Ripeness is all.
